An examination of epidemiological methods to understand their technique of hypothesis formation, retrospective and prospective methods, and sampling problems.

SURVEY OF HEALTH POLITICS (3) An in-depth analysis of laws pertaining to the health fi eld; impact of relationships between and among patients, patients’ families, providers and other third party participants. A review of selected Texas statutes and health litigation will be conducted.

SEMINAR IN RURAL AND INTERNATIONAL HEALTH (3) Presentation of topics related to rural and international health systems and impact of these systems on state, national, and international perspectives.

HEALTH ISSUES OF AGING, DEATH AND DYING (3) Emphasis on social, economic, and physical problems of the aged and benefi ts of wellness programs. Community response to health problems of aging persons; issues related to death.

ORGANIZATION AND ADMINISTRATION OF SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY HEALTH EDUCATION (3) Principles and functions of organization and administration of school and community agencies. Designed to assist the health education specialist to develop and manage formalized school and community educational programs. Emphasis on wellness.

HEALTH PROBLEMS OF ALCOHOL, NARCOTICS, AND TOBACCO (3) A comprehensive study of the harmful and benefi cial effects of drugs, the physical effects, and socioeconomic-cultural impacts on the community, especially among youth. Legislative and educational efforts in this area.

SAFETY EDUCATION (3) Advanced study of situations related to safety in contemporary society; focus on physical, biological, environmental, and cultural infl uences that impact safety of individuals in a global society.

This course examines contemporary community and urban health challenges through a health education and prevention-focused lens. Emphasis is placed on understanding high morbidity and mortality patterns in urban and underserved communities and the social, structural, and environmental factors that contribute to health disparities. Students will explore the distribution, accessibility, and utilization of community and urban health services, with particular attention to wellness promotion, disease prevention, and health education interventions.

HEALTH MANPOWER ISSUES (3) Survey of health occupations by job function, geographic distribution, functional equivalencies, and available training. Issues development and trends in the discipline in schools, the community, industry, and institutional settings. Review of issues confronting health personnel.

HUMAN SEXUALITY: ISSUES AND CONSIDERATIONS (3) Advanced study exploring biological, psychological, social/cultural dimensions of human sexuality as these are affected by human relations. Focuses on issues related to impact of sexuality on human wellbeing and quality of life.

RESEARCH PLANNING IN HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION (3) Research design application to HPE. Provides a conceptual understanding of theories, tools, and processes involved in designing research studies.
